Understanding Shared Slice Visibility
For the Owner (You)
In your Slices list:
- Slice appears in “Fully Funded” or “In Progress” section (as normal)
- Small badge shows number of people you’ve shared with: 👥 1
- Badge appears next to slice name
In slice details:
- Shows “Shared With: [Family Member Name]”
- Contribution Breakdown section showing who funded the slice
- Visual progress bars with percentages per person
- Fairness indicator (e.g., “15% difference”)
- All normal slice information
- Share button available to add more members
- Full control and ownership maintained

For the Family Member
In their Slices list:
- Slice appears in “Shared Slices” section at the top
- Blue section header: “Shared Slices (1)”
- Outline badge shows ”👥 Shared” next to slice name
- Separated from their personal slices
In slice details:
- Shows “Shared By: [Your Name]”
- Contribution Breakdown showing everyone’s funding
- See your own contributions vs others
- Can see all transactions assigned to slice
- Can see balance and funding status
- Actions limited to granted permissions
Email Notification:
- Receive email when slice is shared with you
- Email includes slice details and your permissions
- Direct link to view the shared slice

Contribution Tracking
How It Works
Contributions track who funded the shared slice:
- Moving funds from Safe-to-Spend → Slice
- Funding schedules (paycheck deposits)
- Auto-contributions (scheduled transfers)
Not counted as contributions:
- Assigning transactions (that’s spending FROM the slice)
- The contribution shows who PUT MONEY IN, not who spent it
Viewing Contributions
In shared slice details:
Contribution Breakdown
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Total Contributions: $1,200
You $700 58.3% ████████████░
Partner $500 41.7% ████████░░░░░
2 contributors 16.6% difference
What you see:
- Total amount contributed by all users
- Your contribution amount and percentage
- Visual progress bar per person
- Fairness indicator (percentage difference)
Example:
- You move $400 into “Groceries” slice
- Partner moves $400 into “Groceries” slice
- Contribution breakdown shows: 50% / 50%
- Either person can assign grocery transactions
- Fair split confirmed! ✅
Managing Shared Slices
Viewing Who Has Access
- Open the shared slice
- Look at the slice details table
- “Shared With” row shows all family members with access
Sharing with Additional Members
You can share a slice with multiple family members (one at a time):
- Open the shared slice
- Click “Share” button again
- Select another family member (previously shared members won’t appear)
- Configure their permissions
- Share
Result: Both family members now see the slice, each with their own permissions.
Preventing Duplicate Sharing
The system automatically prevents re-sharing:
- Family members who already have access don’t appear in the share modal
- If all members have access, you’ll see: “All family members already have access to this slice”
- Prevents accidental duplicate shares
Unsharing a Slice (Coming Soon)
Currently, to remove a family member’s access:
- Remove them from your family in Settings → Family Members
- They lose access to all shared slices immediately
Future enhancement: Per-slice unshare and permission editing.
Real-World Examples

- Either person can assign the actual rent payment transaction

- Celebrate milestones together!
Common Questions
Q: Can I share a slice with multiple family members? A: Yes! Share with each member one at a time. Each can have different permissions.
Q: Can family members share slices with me? A: Yes! Any family member can share their slices. Sharing is bidirectional.
Q: What if I share with the wrong person? A: Currently, remove them from your family to revoke all shared slice access. Per-slice unsharing coming soon.
Q: Can family members see my other slices? A: No. Only slices you explicitly share are visible. Everything else is private.
Q: Can I change permissions after sharing? A: Permission editing UI coming soon. For now, you’d need to remove and re-share.
Q: What happens if they assign a transaction but the slice is full? A: They can use their own Safe-to-Spend to fund the assignment (if they have “Move funds” permission).
Q: Can shared slices have different permissions per person? A: Yes! Person A might have view-only while Person B has full access to the same slice.
Q: Do shared slices count toward my slice limit? A: Shared slices count for the owner only, not for members with access.

Best Practices
Start Simple
First shared slice:
- Choose a straightforward expense (rent, utilities)
- Use minimal permissions (view + assign)
- Get comfortable with the feature
- Expand permissions as needed
Communicate Permissions
Discuss with family:
- Who should be able to move funds?
- Who should set up automation?
- What’s the expected contribution split?
- How will you handle shortfalls?
Use Descriptive Slice Names
Good names:
- “Rent - Alex & Sam” (shows who’s sharing)
- “Family Groceries” (indicates shared nature)
- “Joint Vacation Fund” (clear purpose)
Avoid:
- “Shared Slice 1” (unclear purpose)
- “Bills” (too vague)
Set Clear Expectations
Before sharing, agree on:
- Who contributes what amount
- How often to review balances
- What happens if someone can’t contribute
- How to handle overspending
Troubleshooting
I don’t see the Share button
- Verify you’re on Family tier (Settings → Subscription)
- Check you’ve invited family members (Settings → Family Members)
- Make sure at least one invitation has been accepted (status: Active)
Family member doesn’t see the shared slice
- Have them refresh the page
- Verify the share was successful (check “Shared With” in slice details)
- Confirm they’re logged in to the correct account
Can’t share with a specific family member
- They might already have access (check “Shared With” list)
- Verify they’re status is “Active” not “Pending”
- Ensure they’re actually a family member of your subscription
Share button clicked but nothing happened
- Check for error toasts (red notifications)
- Verify family member email is correct
- Try again with a different family member
