How to Chat with Your Finances

Use Chat with Cake to ask anything about your budget, spending, savings, or debt — and get answers from your real numbers

Last updated: July 13, 2026

Chat with Cake is a conversational assistant built into Cake Budget. Ask it anything about your budget, spending, savings, or financial health — “Do I spend more on weekends?”, “When will I be debt-free?” — and it answers from your actual data, not generic advice. It can even move money between slices for you, but only after you confirm.

What You’ll Accomplish

By the end of this guide you’ll have Chat with Cake enabled, know what kinds of questions it’s great at, and understand exactly what it can and can’t do with your money.

Prerequisites

  • ✅ A Cake Budget account (any plan — Starter, Budget Pro, or Family)
  • ✅ AI features enabled (see Step 1 — they’re opt-in and off by default)

Step 1: Enable AI Features

Chat with Cake is part of Cake Budget’s opt-in AI features, alongside AI Insights. If you haven’t enabled them yet, click “Try AI Insights” on the Insights page. You can turn AI features off anytime in Settings, and every other part of Cake Budget works without them.

Step 2: Open the Chat

Click the chat bubble in the bottom-right corner of the app. The Chat with Cake panel opens with a simple prompt: ask anything about your budget, spending, savings, or financial health — plus suggested questions to get you started.

Step 3: Ask Away

Chat with Cake looks up your real data to answer. Some of what it can pull up:

Spending & income

  • “Do I spend more on weekends?”
  • “How much have I earned vs spent this month?”
  • “Am I spending more this month than last month?”
  • “What were my biggest purchases this month?”
  • “How much did I spend at Target in June?”

Budget & slices

  • “Am I over budget anywhere?”
  • “Which slices are behind on funding?”
  • “What’s my Safe-to-Spend right now?”
  • “How’s my emergency fund coming along?”

Bills & subscriptions

  • “What bills are coming up this week?”
  • “What subscriptions am I paying for?”

Debt

  • “When will I be debt-free?”
  • “Which debt should I pay off first?”

Debt answers come straight from your Debt Payoff plan — real payoff order and projected dates, never back-of-the-napkin estimates.

Staying on top of things

  • “What transactions still need to be assigned?”
  • “How can I optimize my spending?”
  • “What automation rules should I create?”

How-to help

  • “How do I set up a funding schedule?”
  • “How do I split a transaction?”

For app questions, Chat with Cake answers from Cake Budget’s built-in help content — so the steps it gives you match the actual app.

Step 4: Let It Move Money (If You Want)

Chat with Cake can do one thing beyond answering questions: move money between slices, or between Safe-to-Spend and a slice.

“Move $50 from Fun Money to Groceries”

Before anything happens, it describes the exact transfer and asks you to confirm. Nothing moves until you say yes.

What it will never do:

  • ❌ Move money without your confirmation
  • ❌ Touch your actual bank accounts — slice transfers are virtual envelope moves inside your budget; Cake never initiates real bank transfers or payments
  • ❌ Change your transactions, slices, rules, or schedules — it can suggest a rule or a budget adjustment, but you make those changes yourself

Privacy

Chat with Cake follows the same privacy rules as all of Cake Budget’s AI features:

  • Opt-in only — off by default, disable anytime
  • No personally identifiable information is sent — no name, account numbers, or bank credentials
  • We never sell your data or share it for marketing
  • Questions are processed by Google’s Gemini model (served through OpenRouter) and are subject to those providers’ data policies, which may include using data to improve their models — one more reason everything is anonymized before it’s sent

See AI-Powered Financial Insights for the full privacy breakdown.

Tips for Better Answers

  • Be specific about time. “How much did I spend on dining out in June?” beats “Am I spending a lot?”
  • Ask follow-ups. It’s a conversation — “What about last month?” works after any question.
  • Use your slice names. “How’s my Vacation slice doing?” gets you funding status, progress, and whether you’re on track.
  • Sanity-check advice. Answers are computed from your real data, but recommendations are suggestions — you know your life best.

Troubleshooting

No chat bubble in the corner — AI features aren’t enabled yet. Head to the Insights page and click “Try AI Insights” (Step 1).

It says it can’t do something — Chat with Cake only answers questions and moves money between slices. For creating slices, rules, or schedules, it will point you to the right screen instead.
